White and Sanders joined the cast of the original series midway through the show's run, along with Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith talked about the experience in a 2024 episode of the Lemonada Media podcast, Legacy Talk with Lena Waithe.

"There was already this deep camaraderie, you know what I mean? With Kadeem [Hardison] and Jasmine [Guy] and Cree [Summer] and the whole cast," she said. "We're the new blood, so they were kind of like, 'All right, whatever.' Not in a funky way, but definitely like, 'Earn your stripes.' "
Smith recalled her first day filming on set. Because she had never really seen herself as a "comedic actress," she was anxious. The energy on set encouraged her to "Be funny. You got to earn your place. You got a live audience and so it wasn't no play-play. Everybody had to hold their own," she explained.
Smith knew what she was doing was working when the longtime cast members — specifically Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert Wayne), Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne), Cree Summer (Winifred 'Freddie' Brooks), and Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson), all of whom are also returning for the sequel series — started embracing her.

"I just remember how the older cast was now starting to relate to me," she said, adding, "That's when I knew — I was like, 'Okay, I'm good.' "
The single-camera comedy is slated to start with ten half-hour episodes from showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride. Debbie Allen, who produced, directed, and acted in the original series, is also returning to executive produce and direct three episodes, including the premiere.
The sequel series centers on Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the youngest daughter of Hillman College's one-time it couple, Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. Deborah arrives for her freshman year at her parents' HBCU alma mater and figures out how to escape their shadow while also building her own legacy.
