Alex Garland, writer-director of Annihilation and Civil War, will adapt video game Elden Ring to live-action film.
Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin developed the video game's story along with Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.
The game's action takes place in the Lands Between, in the aftermath of a war that killed Queen Marika's demigod children.
28 Years Later writer Alex Garland's adaptation of dark fantasy video game Elden Ring is set to film this year ahead of a 2028 release, A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment announced Monday.
The hit 2022 action RPG game is based on a George R. R. Martin mythological story and was developed under the direction of FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki. The game has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and is the recipient of over 400 Game of the Year awards.

"George R.R. Martin wrote the original mythos for this game," FromSoftware spokesperson Yasuhiro Kitao told EW about the game's development. "He created a backstory or a history that takes place many, many years before the events of the game itself, and he wrote this in collaboration with Miyazaki. They consulted and they discussed and they exchanged ideas, but George Martin was the spearhead of that writing process initially."
Elden Ring is set in the Lands Between, a plane ruled by Queen Marika, one of the Eternal. The tale takes place after the events of the Shattering, a war sparked when the Elden Ring broke apart and was claimed by Marika's demigod children. Gamers play as one of the Tarnished, who return to the Lands Between, which was once the home of their ancestors, and traverse the landscape as a sword wielder, a sorcerer, an archer, or similar customizable game character.
